Do you really need to clean your roof?

Categories: Roof Maintenance, Roofing, FAQ

a roof in need of cleaningThe necessity of roof cleaning is one of the most common questions we get from our Dallas-area customers. It’s an important question, and believe it or not, the answer is not always yes. Let me explain. Several factors contribute to the decision on how often to clean a roof and how to clean it.

Do I need to clean my roof? Questions to ask.

  • Is there debris visible such a limbs and piles of leaves/sticks? Pay specific attention to the roof valleys and areas abutting gutters.
  • Are there signs of mold or fungus?
  • Do you see areas of discoloration when you look at the roof from a distance?

Answering “yes” to any of these indicates the likely need for cleaning your roof.

How to clean a shingled roof

For especially bad roofs, we recommend working with a professional Dallas roof cleaning service like Peak Roofing, but in fact many roof cleaning jobs can be handled by the owner. My advice is, “match the method to the mess.” If the issue is simple debris, a power-sprayer hose attachment (not too forceful, avoid knocking off shingle granules) or soft broom does the trick. Fungus or mold requires a different approach including a chemical treatment. There are numerous online articles that go into detail on the various methods. The Peak Roofing & Construction professionals use Triadine 20 Industrial Microbiostat or similar fungicides.

The value of routine maintenance

Let’s be honest. Living in Texas, we have Mother Nature throwing hail, heavy rain and wind at us constantly. All of these shorten the life of our roofs, and there’s no way around it. One of the few proactive things you can do to increase the lifespan of your roof is stay diligent about ongoing maintenance. This includes an annual cleaning and inspection. If debris is left too long, it accelerates the breakdown of the roofing materials. In addition, routine inspections can identify things like cracking chimneys needing repair before leaks occur.

If you have questions about cleaning your roof or you need an inspection done, call the professionals at Peak Roofing & Construction. Our team of skilled Dallas roofers and technicians is happy to provide an inspection and give an honest assessment of your roof’s health.
