Standing Seam: The Roofing of the Future?
There are countless different roof types available on the market today, and standing seam metal roofing is gaining traction fast. Whether it’s because of the appearance or the fact that metal is a “cool” roof that helps bring solar temperatures down, standing seam is growing in popularity. Metal roofing is not new, however. In fact, residential homes and businesses have been using metal roofing for a long, long time now. Only recently has standing seam become immensely more popular, though. Why is that?
Advantages of Standing Seam Metal Roofs
Most people consider appearance when selecting a roofing material for their home. In addition to looks, standing seam ensures your home remains more refreshing and more functional. The most prominent advantage, however, lies in its durability. Metal roofs are built to withstand time. They do not rust, and most won’t fade in the sun, either. The fact that standing seam runs vertically, not horizontally, means the weakest point of a roof is reinforced. While the material may be dented by hail, the material typically lasts longer than your average asphalt roof – 50 years compared to the 17 to 20 of an asphalt roof.
Costs of Standing Seam Metal Roofs
The most significant disadvantage of a metal roof is in the cost. The material typically costs more than asphalt roofing, but offers better advantages in comparison. On average, homeowners should expect between $8 and $11 per square foot installed.
This initial cost is quickly recouped, however. Most households save money on their energy bills by reducing the need for excess cooling during the summer and heating in the winter. Furthermore, roof repair and maintenance are relatively low when compared to other materials. Some brands claim their metal roofing is maintenance free, too.
